There are several bulbs out on my 2002 Odessey. Now that the speedometer light is out and not safe to drive at night since I can't tell how fast I'm going (tip: use a Garmin or TomTom til it gets fixed-they both tell your speed), the bulbs must be replaced!!
My dealer was going to charge $520 to take the dash off ($140 to remove dash) and replace all the bulbs. (He said the bulbs are $22 each and suggested replacing all of them - I will if I can find them for $2.00 for two at Radio Shack and disassemble that dash as you've posted!)
Thanks again for a great, detailed post.

I use a TIVO HD with an antenna in the Raleigh NC area and get good results. The HD TIVO has built in digital OTA receivers and can record two HD shows at the same time (while I am watching a pre-recorded HD show)... amazing. I don't like subscription services either but with TIVO I bear it. I almost never watch live TV.

Marcel;
Good job! Kind of you to take the time to develop and post your process for others to follow. We have an '03 w/ navigation. I have been meaning to address the failed lights in our instrument cluster ever since the more recent ones went out (now 3 out.) I was given your post by a local parts counterman at PepBoys. From your article I went to Majestic's site, then clicked for online orders. I wound up at http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/auto/jsp/mws/PartsSearch.jsp.
Entered my necessary vehicle info and eventually found the bulbs within METER COMPONENTS (a lousy name for the instrument cluster). Anyway, thanks for your help and a push to get me off my but to finally replace the bulbs.
BTW I'll change all bulbs at once and according to the parts list, this assy alone has 6 bulbs (Warning: 5 are different, only 2 are the same, SO BE CAREFUL.)

"This is like removing an entry from a searchable catalog in a library, but leaving the book on the shelf. If you go wandering you can stumble into the book even though it’s not listed in the catalog. "

I've used similar analogies in the past when trying to explain how simply deleting a file isn't really "deleting" the file.

Great post.

Oh, and since recent computers can boot from a USB stick, you can put the operating system onto your existing USB stick instead of burning a CD. Fedora even has a wonderful tool for doing it from Windows: <a href="http://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator" rel="nofollow">LiveUSB Creator</a>. Just click a couple buttons and it automatically sets up your USB stick to boot live images. Very cool and incredibly easy to use.

I believe it was around $3500 for everything. We used a general shop we trust a lot, they do good work, but their labor rates are pretty high and they use good quality parts. I believe the shop got a rebuilt transmission from the dealer.

Marcelk, also there is a sacrifical annode in most water heaters that attracts the ions that would normally eat the tank itself. You can replace that every 3-4 years and the heater should last longer than its design life. That reminds me, I need to do it on my heater really soon. You can contact the manufacturer to get a replacement. Keep in mind that if you let it go too long the corrosion gets so big in diameter that you cannot get it out of the hole.

One other thought, a second place to check for odd sized water heaters if the home center fails you, would be a real plumbing supply store (Ferguson, etc). But keep in mind the reason your plumber's fee was so much higher than just buying a water heater at HomeD ($280 typically) is that they charge more for commercial brands, I found that they were charging $500 -$600 for the same capacity and warranty, but it was a heftier product.... I think the maker was something like "State"

handyman john, yes, the 3 bulbs I just got from the dealer were about $8 each. I feel gouged, but not as much as replacing a transmission.

Do be aware that there are multiple types of bulbs. The climate control section has at least 2 different kinds (white base vs black base), I don't remember if those are different that the others (clock, rocker switches, etc).

When I went to the dealer to get replacement parts, the parts diagram on their computer was pretty useless. So telling the parts guy where they came from didn't help much. Bringing in the faulty bulbs is the best way to find the matching replacement parts.

Another tip I discovered: use a multimeter to test for continuity of the bulb before replacing it. One of the bulbs I was working on just needed to be reseated in the socket. If the bulb doesn't have continuity, then it does need to be replaced.

Randy, true indeed. I recently made another pass at more bulbs in the dash, specifically in the climate control section. There were 2 different kinds of bulbs, one kind was in stock, the other wasn't. Lucky for me the climate controls are the first section to come out of the dash, so it was easy to temporarily put it back together while waiting for the backorder to arrive.

A second source for the bulb for the clock is Radio Shack of all places. They get $2 for a 2 pack. Part number 272-1092. All you have to do is remove the old bulb from the old blue mount/socket and insert the new bulb. Many are reporting on the forums that some dealers are charging $8-10 for one bulb.

Don't assume the dealers has the bulbs you need are in stock. Make a detailed drawing of what doesn't work, then call/see your dealer. Using your owners manual as a reference, check each idiot light to make sure it works. They will ask! Should be fine, but why take the chance! Check your sliding door, A/C controls and interior light switch bulbs also. If not, there is a good chance you'll be pulling the dash out a second time or leaving your van sit for days waiting on the right bulbs to come in. Its your choice! Above all, be patient with the parts department. This is not a one bulb fit-all solution. 2002 Odyssey 166k miles

We opted for a tankless heater this time around. It costs a lot more, and the payback time for saved utility bills is a long time--about 10 years. So perhaps it never pays back. But it does never run out of hot water, once it gets going.

Just a little note to say thanks for the info you gave about the hot water heater. It was very helpful. I have been wanting to do this for a while, but, was'nt quite sure how. This is when a man around the house comes in handy!
  Thanks again.

Among your instruction, I tried to disconnect the hazard light connector, so I press the tab on the harness, but the wires didn't come out. I struggled for over half an hour, but it was stuck. Do you have an idea where exactly I have to press the tabs? I would appreciate your advice greatly.

great stuff. I learn new thing today. cat /proc/cpuinfo .

Anyway, recently I did a silly test on my own to see if my laptop is 64 bit. I downloaded the Ubuntu 64 bit live image. I use UNetBootin to put it in a USB drive (1G). Then I just boot from the USB. On a 64 bit pc, it will boot and goes into the desktop. For 32 bit, it will give you an error.

Not the most elegant way, but it give me a quick indication of which PC is 64 bit.

quila, I don't know about that one. My first thought is to check that you are running RAD from a userid with administrative privileges. I know that to do anything useful with the IBM Installation Manager you must have those (root in Linux, Administrator in Windows).

Just got the car back from shop. It took 2 weeks for the parts to arrive, another 2 weeks in the shop. Everything looks good. A couple minor imperfections that aren't worth complaining about. But now the scratches and dings on the rest of the car stand out, so I'll be taking a look at packages for scratch removal and touch up paint.

I'll put a review of the body shop on <a href="http://marcelk.yelp.com" rel="nofollow">Yelp</a>.

A few more points about inflation:

- the stick-type pressure gauges are junk, at least that is my experience. Get a dial-type round gauge with a needle that turns. For example, something like <a href="http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Tire-Pressure-Gauge-G-H--Meiser_1920111-P_N3192_A|GRP2068____" rel="nofollow">this</a>. It's more accurage, easier to read, and not much more expensive. Make sure it can go up to at least 60psi, for the spare tire as mentioned below.

- Use the correct inflation levels. The PSI rating printed on the sidewall of the tire is the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure. On my cars, when you open the driver's door there is a sticker on the door frame that has the manufacturer's recommended tire sizes and inflation PSI. Use that pressure.

- Don't forget to check the inflation on your spare tire. The last thing you want is to have a flat and discover that the spare has too little pressure to use. There are two challenges to this: (1) The spare is tucked away out of sight in your trunk or other hidden compartment. Out of sight, out of mind. (2) if you have a space-saver spare (not full size) like everyone else, they need a much higher pressure. My spares need 60psi, where my regular tires are around 30psi. Tires with higher pressure tend to leak faster. I just checked my spare (which has never been used) for the first time in 6 months, and it had fallen to 45psi. Unfortunately most spares are stored with the valve stem down, so you may need to remove the tire from the trunk to check the pressure and top it off. Spend a few minutes doing that now, it will definitely be worth it when you are on the side of the freeway with a flat.

The last time I had a set of tires installed by my local shop, they suggested to inflate the tires with a special pure nitrogen gas, instead of air. It was something like $30 extra. So I'm standing at the service desk evaluating this option in my head. The first two thoughts that come to me are "this feels like a sell job" and "didn't I learn in Chemistry 101 that air is 78% nitrogen?". So I decline and tell them that standard air is good enough for me.

I have a small air compressor at home, and after I run it I drain water from it. That tells me that a standard compression-decompression cycle will remove at least some moisture from the air it discharges. And anytime I need new tires it is due to tread wear, not rubber deterioration.

After I get home, I do a little searching and find a couple of good articles, one a <a href="http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2694/is-it-better-to-fill-your-tires-with-nitrogen-instead-of-air" rel="nofollow">no-nonsense explanation</a>, and the other from trusty <a href="http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2007/10/tires-nitrogen-.html" rel="nofollow">Consumer Reports</a>. The bottom line is that under normal circumstances standard air is good enough for you too. But if you do like the appeal of nitrogen, it won't hurt anything but your wallet. If it's free, go for it. Yes, there is some benefit, but it is so minimal I don't think it is worth the cost. If you really want to worry about the gas in your tires, check the inflation PSI more often than you typically do. And if you want to improve your mileage, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy-maximizing_behaviors" rel="nofollow">adjusting your driving technique</a> will make a bigger impact.

Anytime you go in for a balance or rotation, the local tire shop will probably offer to do a free alignment check. The reason it is free is because they think there is a good chance to find you are out of alignment. Getting the car on the lift and measuring the alignment is about half the work of doing the alignment. Keeping a good alignment is really important for controlling tire wear, so do keep track of your alignment. If your tires are shot, I wouldn't worry about it. But if putting on new tires I would definitely recommend an alignment. If a 4-wheel alignment service costs $70, think about how many times you should have it performed over the lifetime of the tires to be cost-effective against premature wear on your tires. Tires should last at least 30k or 40k miles.

I heard a story on Car Talk about a guy that needed a single replacement tire on an all-wheel-drive car. The tire shop wanted him to buy all 4 tires new because the tires need to have the same wear level (tread depth), otherwise one wheel will spin slightly faster than the other and cause mechanical problems. So a $150 repair turned into a $600 repair.

TireRack.com has a service where they can take a new tire and shave it to a particular tread depth for situations just like this. You buy just one new tire, then have them shave it to match the depth of your existing good tires. You're all set for a fraction of the price and much less landfill waste.

Don't forgot about the cost of balancing over the lifetime of the tire. If your local tire shop is going to charge $40 per car for a rebalance for tires bought elsewhere, but include that service for free for tires you buy from them, that could run an easy $40-80 difference over the lifetime just for balancing. So this may eat into savings that you get for buying tires online. My local garage does a free rotation during an oil change, but the big-box warehouses might do the same.

For my last set of tires I did my research on TireRack.com, but was in a big hurry to get them installed, so I negotiated my local tire shop down by more than $60 for the set by waving around the Tire Rack mail order prices. I got the impression that the local tire shops dislike Tire Rack for eating into their business. Most local tire shops can get most any tire from a distributor within 1-2 days. If you know what you want, they can get it for you at no additional cost. Don't go with only what the local shop has in stock in that particular store on that particular day.

Bottom line, I am still of the opinion that the best deal (considering the lifetime of the tires) is to buy them from and install them at Sam's Club / BJ's / etc. Just be aware of the lead time for their special orders if they aren't in stock.

Do the math to figure out which source is the best for you: tires + shipping + mount/balance/stem + disposal + alignment + periodic rotation + mid-life rebalance + hurry.

I did have a weird problem where the boot would hang on the bios screen after a power-off boot, not just a ctrl-alt-del. What was really weird is that the bios screen (RAM test, disk detection) wouldn't completely render before the lockup. I could even see where on the bios screen where only part of a particular character was rendered. It hung consistently at the same point after multiple boot attempts. I began wondering if I had a bad component. Then I unplugged one of the USB devices (a USB hub, actually), and it booted fine after that point. Haven't had any problems since, even when doing power-off boots.

Jerry, thanks for the links to the v2 specs. I couldn't find that earlier. Now everyone can do a side-by-side comparison.

This is my first floppy-less PC, so I don't mind the lack of a floppy interface. Honestly, I haven't used a floppy in years.

Hey Marcel, great review! I just ordered the same model and it should be at my door in a few days.

Just to let you and anyone else who wants to know, the difference between the SG31G2-V2 and the SG31G2 is that the newer one (the V2) does not have a floppy connector on the motherboard and subsequently has no floppy cable included. It also looks like, based on the specs http://global.shuttle.com/product_detail_spec.jsp?PI=1267
and
http://global.shuttle.com/product_detail_spec.jsp?PI=646

that a couple of things have changed around: a newer LAN chip, a VIA firewire chip instead of a Texas Instruments one, and one less USB header on the motherboard.

I'm hoping to put a 8800 GT into my system...here's hoping the 250W PSU can handle it.

Good work!

I bought a Shuttle too, a SG5 something, I don't remember. And it's Amazing! I was looking for a pc with a quad cpu and not waste electricity. Take no space, no waste of electricity, has a big performance as the big ones, it's quite and you can add more hardware if you want.
I use this for work, I'm not a gamer like you so I use the integrated video and works very well. Some 3d applications don't run well with this intel video but, what the hell I use it on software compatibility :)

One note about the tire pressure: I originally said that higher tire pressure appears to help in strong cornering. As I replaced my original set of tires at 40k miles, there was uneven tire wear. So I do recommend sticking with the manufacturer's tire pressure. BTW, I got my new tires from <a href="/archives/91" rel="nofollow">Tire Rack</a>.

Wow, very heartfelt post!

I disagree on a couple points. (Meaning that for the most part I think you're spot on!)

First of all about the saying that if men had to have the babies we would die out. All due respect to women and not to belittle in any way the special hell and pain that can be childbirth, but that's really a ridiculous saying. Women's bodies are designed to be able to do that. I can't say that I personally have had to go through too much misery, but I know men who have and can take it. If we had to we would, and that's just the way it would be.

And that book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" I found to be mainly scare-mongering. (That sounds worse in words that I feel about it, but I can't think of something else that would fit better.) They look at the most negative of everything, it seems like. We found another that was much better: "Great Expectations." At the very least it fit my style much better.

I agree that if you get the hand-me-downs they aren't all that expensive. We splurge a little here or there, but have been pleasantly surprised for the most part. I have to say that Legos, even spendy as they can be, have been about our best money spent on toys for Jasper. He'll spend many hours just playing and building. I *love* it!!

Thanks!

One maintenance update, I'm starting to experience synchronizer problems in 2nd and 3rd gear. It's occasional, but still unexpected at 60k miles. Other than that, the car has been extremely reliable.

Ditto to silentgiant re the manual transmission. I walk through a big parking lot at work and pass by a number of RSXs. They are all automatic transmissions, and I ask myself, "What are these people thinking? You're missing out on the fun!"

I have a base model 2004 Acura RSX with a 5-speed Manual.

I think I'm happier with the base model than I would have been with the Type-S since I have put in an aftermarket CD deck with a USB-input that allows me to search and control my ipod through the deck's controls.

I have to say one thing.. The Acura RSX was meant to be driven with a clutch and shifter, whether 5 or 6 speeds.

Four months on, haven't used the lubricating drops for quite a while, no halo effect that is perceptible, vision is quite sharp. It still was a lot of money, but the outcome is everything they said it would be.

I think I've finally gotten out of the habit of reaching for my contact solution when I go to bed. In fact, I gave my solution stash to my daughter and returned the unused contacts to the place where I got them. I occasionally am surprised when I wake up in the morning and can see immediately.

My pleasure. I was apprehensive about doing it until I did it once. Since then I've done it a couple more times for more bulbs and a new stereo. I say "everything is intuitively obvious once you get it figured out."

Almost three months on now. I'm using lubricating drops only rarely, and the halo affect isn't as noticeable. Eyesight is as good (or slightly better) than my contacts were, no problems with that. But now I'm thinking that it was a lot of money to spend, especially in the middle of a recession. But technically, everything is good.

One of the features which gets overlooked on this car is the gas mileage. I am consistently getting 30 MPG, through a combination of city and highway driving (mostly city, actually). And I drive with a lead foot. This is basically the same mileage as an econocar like the Honda Fit. I suspect my RSX is a lot more fun to drive than an econocar. And I'm using regular (non-premium) gas.

My recent issue of Car and Driver says the observed mileage of an Acura TL is 19 MPG. A Honda Civic Si is 24 MPG. A Mini John Cooper Works Clubman is 24 MPG. So I get the performance of a sports coupe while sipping gas like an econocar. I still don't understand while Acura discontinued production of the RSX.

The only mechanical problems I've had in 5 years and 50k miles is a faulty oxygen sensor. Everything else is basic maintenance. I put on a new set of tires this summer. I'm still extremely satisfied with this car.

At the end of the first week, if someone asked me "is it worth it" I would probably say no. But that is with the eyedrops every 2 hours, lots of halo effect, and still sensitivity to bright lights.

But now at the end of the 3rd week, I'm down to simple lubricating drops only occasionally, the halo effect is lessened but still present, and the brightness sensitivity has lessened. I'm still getting used to not taking out my contacts at bed time. My vision for driving is quite good (still some nighttime glare), and I'm not having problems with reading my computer screens. If someone asked me "is it worth it" at this point, I'd say "it's pretty good".

Let's see what the next couple months hold.

Let’s see what the next couple months hold.

Transunion is now offering a credit freeze at no cost, even if your state's law doesn't require the fee to be waived. Take a look at <a href="https://annualcreditreport.transunion.com/fa/securityFreeze/landing" rel="nofollow">their website</a>.

Something else to consider: take a look at Sam's Club, Walmart, BJ's, or other discount warehouse in your area that has a tire service center. You can probably special order tires through them at a similar discount, but still get the low cost mounting/balancing ($12.50/tire) plus lifetime rotation/balancing plus no shipping cost. Usually the tires they carry in stock are quite limited, but they have a good selection for special orders. But plan on 7-14 days of lead time on a special order. Look at their web sites, and perhaps even better walk into their store to see what they can order for you. Do your research on TireRack.com to find your top 3 choices, and then see what these local retailers can get for you. Ask if they include lifetime balancing. If you're not in a hurry, this may be the best overall deal.

I was forced to try another ring size for the earbuds (after one of my kids pulled the original rings off and lost them). I went for a jog with the small rings, and they didn't fall out, but the left earbud that bears the cord weight did come loose every few minutes. But also the bass was less pronounced since the seal was less tight than with the original ring size. Still have the whistling from the wind. If the left earbud didn't come loose occasionally, I would jog with these.

I did go out for a jog earlier this week, and the earbuds fell out of my ear in about 15 seconds. Repeatedly. But before they did, The sound of my breathing and joint impact was amplified greatly inside my head, obviously because of the seal. So these are not earbuds for activity.

Additionally, being outdoors in a breeze, the wind caused a whistle sound as it ran past the small holes on the outside of the earbuds, which didn't completely drown out the content, but was noticeable in a bad way.

So it sounds like they are best used indoors while being mostly still. Hmm. I'll need to keep my old Sony earbuds for jogging.

Christopher, thanks for the link to the head unit modification! If successful, the FM reception should still work after the modification. Looks a bit challenging, but when I get some downtime I may give it a try. I've lamented the lack of an aux jack, and I thought something like this should be possible. I'm also thinking of upgrading the stock speakers with better drivers, frankly I haven't been that impressed with them - I think that would provide the best bang-for-the-buck sound improvement.

I got an 02 Type-S just a couple months ago, as a sort of college graduation present to myself. After a 6000 mile (yep, six zero) road trip from DC to San Francisco, I agree with you to an extent on the seats. I've had perennial lower back issues since college rugby, but for the most part, the seats weren't bad. There were a few days in the Rocky Mountains where a lot of side to side movement, plus a lot of shifting, made for a sore back, but other than that, they weren't bad.

Also, yes, iPod in options suck bad on the car. I'm using a Sony tape adapter that works well enough, but I'd kill for a clean way to have an aux in for my iPod. There's a modification some guys at Club RSX came up with (see http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread.php?t=547118), but I like my FM reception too much to muck with it.

Basically with Tivo you are amortizing the cost of the hardware with a subscription, which eventually turns into profit. If you want to go the no-subscription non-amortized self-build route, you could try MythTV. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythTV

I finally joined the HD club and thought that I would miss my Tivo...and I guess I still do, but I've found myself just staring at the HD commercials because they look so good :). I'm shocked that the news looks so good. My tax return has gone to good use this year. I'm still perplexed about what to do for a way to timeshift HD content. I have a series 1 tivo, and use it with no subscription as a digital VCR, and I can't bring myself to pay for an HD Tivo with a subscription. I thought I would try an HD tuner card for my computer, so I bought the Hauppage HD tuner and the quality wasn't worth it so I ended up returning it. We'll see what happens in the future. I'd really like to see someone like Tivo make a device that will record HD content, that I don't have to pay a monthly subscription for...but I guess then it all boils down to the market.

I was very happy with Camstasia as well, but like you said, it's not cheap. I've come across two alternatives. One is an open source knock off called Camstudio from camstudio.org. The other is even more geeky and is call vnc2swf which connects to a running vnc session and records that to a flash file. Both have gotten the job done on occasion without having to write up a business case for the purchase.

Marcell,
Thanks again for talking with me at Lynette's funeral. Your blog is GREAT! Just for anyone else that's interested. I recently got a screen protector for my PSP. It works wonderfully, but was relatively expensive. On the bright side of things it DOES come with a lifetime warranty.
Anyway, They provide you with a "kit" to apply your screen protector yourself. This kit includes the squeegee, and a "special spray". You simply spray the protector, making sure the liquid covers the entire surface, then apply it to whatever you want. It allows you slide the protector around on the surface without it sticking. When you're satisfied with the position, you can just squeegee out the liquid and voile! When you squeegee out the water, it also gets rid of 100% of the bubbles making your protector completely invisible.
After some research, I discovered this "special liquid" is nothing more than water, with a little bit of dish soap. Since I learned this technique, I have used it on pretty much ever single electronic device I own. It works great.
You probably already knew that, but HEY! Just in case...There ya go!

One of the very few complaints I have about the RSX-S is that there isn't a way to have an iPod adapter. Because the Type S has a built-in CD changer, the typical iPod adapters aren't applicable because they usually simulate a CD changer to the built-in stereo. So the CD changer role is already occupied. And there isn't an Aux input, much less a USB or true iPod interface. If you have a standard RSX (not Type S) without a CD changer, then you should be OK for installing an iPod adapter.

So the only real options for the Type S are an FM transmitter (yuck) or a cassette adapter (not so bad). All cars should have an Aux input, but I can't fault Acura that much since the car's design (first model shipped at end of 2001, designed before that) predates the iPod popularity (first model shipped at end of 2001). So I use a cassette adapter, it's a bit of a pain, but better than an FM transmitter.

It has a lot of similarities to the RSX, and <a href="http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/car/112_0601_coty_2006_honda_civic" rel="nofollow">Motor Trend loved it</a>.

Yup, how the Tivo will control the digital converter box is an open issue. I'm deferring the digital upgrade for as long as I can. I still have an analog tv, and waiting for the price to drop even further. I think I know what I'll be doing with my tax refund in 2008.

You might be interested in these quotations from the Reform Jewish service for Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement):

"What is genuine repentance? When an opportunity for transgression occurs and we resist it, not out of fear or weakness, but because we have repented."

"For transgressions against God, the Day of Atonement atones; for for transgressions of one human being against another, the Day of Atonement does not atone until they have made peace with one another."

Just curious -- what are your plans when NTSC goes away in just under 2 years? You'll still be able to watch OTA, but you'll need a digital converter box -- the open question is how well will your TiVo be able to control the converter?

(I'm currently on DirecTV with a HDTiVo, and my headache will come when they get rid of the MPEG2 feeds in favor of MPEG4.)

Do not feel completely alone. Erik also loves romantic comedy - and it's not just to make me happy. He already owned "Say Anything" when I met him. Also, we both much prefer videos at home to spending a bunch in the theatre. I still need to re-watch Little Manhattan, as I missed most of the middle. Still, I liked what I saw.
